Hope you got a major kick out of Chrissy throwing down on Kimbella, because that may be the last of it.

R.I.P Chuck Brown

May 16th, 2012 | By love not hate

Chuck Brown, the gravelly voiced bandleader who capitalized on funk’s percussive pulse to create go-go, the genre of music that has soundtracked life in black Washington for more than three decades, died May 16 at the Johns Hopkins University hospital in Baltimore. He was 75.The death was confirmed by his manager Tom Goldfogle. The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Mr. Brown had been hospitalized for pneumonia.

Known as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” the performer, singer, guitarist and songwriter developed his commanding brand of funk in the mid-1970s to compete with the dominance of disco.

Like a DJ blending records, Mr. Brown used nonstop percussion to stitch songs together and keep the crowd on the dance floor, resulting in marathon performances that went deep into the night. Mr. Brown said the style got its name because “the music just goes and goes.”

In addition to being go-go’s principal architect, Mr. Brown remained the genre’s most charismatic figure. On stage, his spirited call-and-response routines became a hallmark of the music, reinforcing a sense of community that allowed the scene to thrive. As go-go became a point of pride for black Washingtonians, Mr. Brown became one of the city’s most recognizable figures.

“No single type of music has been more identified with Washington than go-go, and no one has loomed so large within it as Chuck Brown,” former Washington Post pop music critic Richard Harrington wrote in 2001.

Mr. Brown’s creation, however, failed to have the same impact outside of the Beltway. The birth of go-go doubled as the high watermark of Mr. Brown’s national career. With his group the Soul Searchers, his signature hit “Bustin’ Loose” not only minted the go-go sound, it spent four weeks atop the R&B singles chart in 1978.

“Bustin’ Loose” was “the one record I had so much confidence in,” Mr. Brown told The Post in 2001. “I messed with it for two years, wrote a hundred lines of lyrics and only ended up using two lines. . . . It was the only time in my career that I felt like it’s going to be a hit.”

It was Mr. Brown’s biggest single, but throughout the 1980s “We Need Some Money,” “Go-Go Swing” and “Run Joe” became local anthems, reinforced by radio support and the grueling performance schedule that put Mr. Brown on area stages six nights a week.

While rap music exploded across the country, go-go dominated young black Washington, with groups including Trouble Funk, Rare Essence and Experience Unlimited following in Mr. Brown’s footsteps.

Mr. Brown performed less frequently in his final years but still took the stage regularly. He would often comment on his golden years in rhyme.

“I’m not retired because I’m not tired. I’m still getting hired and I’m still inspired,” he said in 2006. “As long as I can walk up on that stage, I want to make people happy. I want to make people dance.”

Charles Louis Brown was born in Gaston, N.C., on Aug. 22, 1936. He never knew his father, Albert Louis Moody, a Marine. He took the surname of his mother, Lyla Louise Brown, a housekeeper who raised her several children in poverty.

My rap aint bout KIM, KANYE explains!

May 16th, 2012 | By love not hate

An insider says talk of a wedding for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, above at a recent Lakers game, is premature.

KANYE WEST may have some explaining to do if he’s telling Kim Kardashian the lyrics to his latest song are about her. A source close to West tells us the new rap — which the media has referred to as “White Dress” and, at this point, seems to consist solely of lyrics — isn’t about Kardashian at all, but rather “an ex-love interest.” According to the source, “those lyrics were done like two weeks before” Kanye and Kim started seeing each other in mid-March. The rap, which includes the line, “now she back in the club in a tight dress with dreams of someday wearing a white dress” have fueled speculation that West and Kardashian are already talking about tying the knot. But our source says that’s not the case, noting that Yeezy was linked to a number of models, at least one actress and other assorted beauties before hooking up with Kardashian and creating a media frenzy.

Seems like Ace Hood‘s hustling has paid off in a big way. On Monday night, on the set of DJ Khaled‘s “Take It to the Head” video shoot, Birdman made a very special announcement to MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway concerning Ace Hood and Khaled’s budding label.

“I’d like to let the world know that Khaled’s brand, which is We the Best, is officially signed to YMCMB and the first act coming out that umbrella … will be Ace Hood,” Birdman said. “I always wanted to have a chance to work with Ace Hood.”

Ace has kept close ties with Birdman’s Cash Money/ Young Money camp. Birdman appeared on “This N—a Here,” a track off from Ace’s 2009 sophomore effort Ruthless, and Lil Wayne jumped on Hood’s “Hustle Hard” remix last year. Baby has had his eye on Ace for a while now, but he was signed to Def Jam. At press time, it is unclear whether Def Jam is involved in this new deal.

“We wanted to do it right, set it up right. I think Ace Hood is a superstar,” the #1 Stunna said. “I love his work ethic, I think he’s a very talented young man and he gonna be a big superstar in this business and I wanted to be the one to help him become that. It was important to me.”

So now, through Khaled’s We the Best, Ace Hood joins Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga and, of course, Lil Wayne on the already-powerhouse label. “When you got a young man with that kind of focus, you never know how far he can go in this business,” Birdman said.

What do you think of Ace Hood calling YMCMB home? Let us know in the comments!

How much was Dick Clark worth?

(CBS/AP) Despite claims that he lost millions in the 1960s when he had to divest himself of record-company interests to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest in a music industry scandal, Dick Clark was a wealthy man when he died Wednesday at age 82.

Fran La Maina, the longtime president of Dick Clark Productions Inc., said Clark amassed a fortune that reached into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

“He had this never-give-up attitude. He was a great salesperson and a task master,” said La Maina, who started as the production company’s financial controller in 1966.

Clark promoted more than 100 concerts a year back when promoters, not bands, called the shots. He launched shows like the “American Music Awards” and “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” – shows that are highly valued by advertisers because fans still want to watch them live in an age of digital video recorders.

At one point, he hosted shows on all three major TV networks- “the $20,000 Pyramid” on ABC, “Live Wednesday” on CBS and “TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes” on NBC.

By the time it went public in 1987, Dick Clark Productions had several thousand employees, had launched a restaurant chain with Clark’s name on it, and ran a communications-promotion business. Revenue exceeded $100 million a year and the company was profitable.

Despite its profitability, the business didn’t always keep pace with Wall Street’s quarter-by-quarter demands. Clark decided the company should be taken private by a third party, even though he could have taken the company over by himself.

He was quoted at the time as saying he wanted a third party involved so there would be no question about taking advantage of shareholders. The company was taken private for $140 million by a consortium led by Mosaic Media Group Inc.

Instead of cashing out, Clark sold a portion of his 70 percent stake, while reinvesting the rest with the new ownership group and staying on as CEO. He voluntarily accepted $12.50 per share when other shareholders got $14.50. Usually, company founders seek the highest premium in a buy-out.

.

In 2007, the company was sold again, this time to Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and his private equity firm RedZone Capital, for $175 million. Clark sold the remainder of his stake. He remained connected to the company only through his annual appearances on the New Year’s Eve show.

Clark also founded Dick Clark Communications, which produces corporate events and trade shows.

Clark learned early to branch out. By the end of the 1950s, Clark wrote in a memoir he had business relationships with 33 record companies, including Cameo-Parkway Records and Swan Records. He also owned a record pressing business. These were the relationships he severed in the record-industry scandal.

Over the years, Clark invested in other assets outside the production company, including multiple properties in Malibu, according to Dick Clark Productions lawyer Marty Katz and others.

He paid nearly $15 million for a 12-acre oceanfront estate in Malibu. known as Gull’s Way, in 2002, according to the Los Angeles Times. He had offices and his home in Malibu.

In his later years, Clark was trying to sell shows “just like any other independent producer,” said his publicist, Paul Shefrin.
