Mother kept her pregnancy a secret, gave birth to twins on the toilet, smothered them and dumped their tiny bodies in a laundry basket

March 13th, 2013 | By love not hate

Jailed: Lindsey Lowe, now 26, faces to murder charges for her newborn twin sons but prosecutors are not seeking the death penaltyJailed: Lindsey Lowe, now 26, faces to murder charges for her newborn twin sons but prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty

The mother who gave birth to twin boys on the toilet, smothered them and dumped their bodies in a laundry basket sobbed in court yesterday as the jury heard disturbing details about how officers found the cold, dead newborns wrapped in bloody towels.

Two police officers choked up while testifying about how they discovered the twin boys after the father of Lindsey Lowe, 26, from Hendersonville, Tennessee, called 911 after making the grizzly discovery.

She gave birth in her parents’ affluent home secretly in September 2011 and covered the newborn twin boy’s mouths with her hand to stifle the screams so no one would hear.

Officer Jeremy Fentress took the stand on Tuesday and described entering the bedroom of defendant Lindsey Lowe and pulling back a bloody towel.

He stopped speaking for a few seconds, then told the court: ‘After I pulled the bloody towel back, I saw a deceased infant.’

Fentress said he touched the baby with two fingers and found the infant was cold and not breathing.

The newborn was the first of two found on September 14, 2011, in the two-story home of the upper-middle-class neighborhood in Hendersonville, about 20 miles northeast of Nashville.

The second baby was found by Sgt James Garrett, who described getting ready to lay the first baby down on a bed ‘softly and gently’ before he discovered the umbilical cord, still attached to something deeper in the basket.

Fentress held the body of the first baby while Garrett pulled aside a sheet to uncover the second one – who was also dead. Garrett said he placed the first baby back in the basket beside his brother.

Defense: Her attorney John Pellegrin, seen at her side in an earlier hearing, is arguing that she did not know that she was pregnant and was not of sound mind when she smothered the newborns to deathDefense: Her attorney John Pellegrin, seen at her side in an earlier hearing, is arguing that she did not know that she was pregnant and was not of sound mind when she smothered the newborns to death

Lowe, now 26, is facing two counts of first-degree murder at her trial, which opened Monday.

She had told police she gave birth to the twin boys in the bathroom of the home on the night of September 12, 2011, and smothered them so that her parents would not hear their cries.

Lowe’s parents found one of the babies two days later and alerted police.

Both sides in the case agree that Lowe did not act like a pregnant woman in the days and weeks leading up to the birth.

Defense attorney John Pellegrin told jurors Lowe was a bridesmaid in a wedding the weekend before the birth where she was dancing, laughing and posing for pictures.

The night before the births, one of her sorority sisters stayed at her house, even sleeping in Lowe’s bed, he said. And yet no one knew she was pregnant.

Prosecutors suggested that a lack of preparations showed Lowe never intended for the babies to live.

‘Officers, during their search of the house, found no evidence of an expectation of life,’ Assistant District Attorney Blanton said during opening statements.

‘There were no diapers, no pacis (pacifiers), no blankets, no car seat.’

They pointed out that Lowe had been engaged to her college sweetheart in 2011, but had gotten pregnant when she had an affair with another man.

‘Miss Lowe made no preparation for the births of these children because no one was going to interfere with her life,’ Blanton said in opening statements.

But defense attorneys argued that the case was not so simple.

‘Lindsey Lowe was pregnant, but she refused to accept it, her mind refused to accept it,’ Pellegrin said.

He argued that Lowe didn’t realize what was happening when she started to give birth in the bathroom.

‘She thinks her internal organs are coming out,’ he told the jury.

Family, friends and church members have come to Lowe’s defense.

In earlier hearings, Lowe’s father Mark Lowe described her as a ‘model daughter,’ saying she moved back in with her family after graduating from Western Kentucky University in 2008 and took care of her mother, who had a brain tumor.

The final witness Tuesday was Detective Steve Malach, who interviewed Lowe after the babies were discovered.

He testified how Lowe told him she gave birth and then put the babies in a laundry basket.

When he asked if she ever checked on them, ‘she said she couldn’t face it,’ he told jurors.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Lowe could face life in prison without parole. Prosecutors had said previously they would not seek the death penalty.

Rihanna set for fashion tribute

March 1st, 2013 | By love not hate

Rihanna

The New York-based retailer will stock the singer’s designs for River Island from Tuesday and will also launch the RIHtrospective exhibition that celebrates seven of her best-known outfits.

The number of looks to be displayed has a special meaning.

The Barbadian singer recently completed her 777 tour to promote latest musical offering Unapologetic and has also released seven albums, won seven Grammy and Billboard awards and been on seven covers of Complex magazine.

The looks will cover everything from her red-carpet style to her onstage outfits.

The star’s stylist, Mel Ottenberg, told WWD her wardrobe ranges from “really pulled together or grungy for performances.”

According to the website, Rihanna helped pick the looks, which include the Adam Selman pink mini-dress she sported at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last year.

Rihanna’s collection will be available in River Island and Opening Ceremony stores and online from Tuesday.

The exhibition can be viewed at Opening Ceremony’s New York flagship and will stay open for three weeks.

Rihanna is excited to be involved in the fashion project.

“I love the high-street shops,” she gushed to the UK edition of Elle.

“The stylish kids on the streets, they’re the ones that set the trends. The designers see what they’re doing and go and design their line and sell it back to the same kids and it’s like, why not go directly to the source?”

The star – whose real name is Dwayne Carter Jr. – told a packed audience that he bedded Adrienne Williams Bosh, the spouse of Chris Bosh.

The outspoken music star made the claim on stage as he hosted LIV on Sunday All Star Weekend edition at Stereo Live in Houston, Texas.

It comes after he was escorted out of a Miami Heat game at the American Airlines Arena last week for apparently cheering on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Also, according to multiple reports, a fan named Danny Vega said that Lil Wayne was kicked out for making gun gestures at another attendee.

Despite his apparent rage towards the organisation he paid his respects upon hearing that the owner of his favourite team had passed away aged 80 on Monday morning after a long illness.

He said about LA Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss via Twitter: ‘Rest peacefully Dr. Buss and may God bless your family. Purple-Gold.’

Tiger woods loans his plane to he new BIOTCHHHHH!

February 11th, 2013 | By love not hate

Man, it’s tough being a global celebrity. You do a friend a favor by sending them a plane, as friends do, and all of a sudden the press is all over it, making a big deal. Can’t a multimillionaire get a little peace?

By now you’ve probably heard that Tiger Woodsallegedly sent his plane to help Lindsey Vonn get home following her injury during the world championships in AustriaTMZ snapped Vonn boarding the plane, and other outlets, includingthe Swiss tabloid-eseque newspaper Blick (as cited by Ski Racing Magazine) also reported that the plane was Woods’. While planes are indeed trackable and identifiable by their tail numbers, Woods’ plane is private and therefore does not register its travels, and as you can see above, there’s no plane number visible in that photo.

Woods and Vonn have been the subject of plenty of rumors; Woods’ story you know, and Vonn finalized her divorce in January. So there you go. However, Woods has made no public statement on the matter, and Vonn actually released a statement trying to shut down the rumors:

“Lindsey is currently in the midst of the World Cup season in Europe,” the statement read. “Her focus is solely on competing and on defending her titles and thus she will not participate in any speculation surrounding her personal life at this time.”

Woods isn’t scheduled to play again for several weeks. We’re certain that he’ll be forthcoming about his private life at his next press conference.

Lil Wayne says Heat kicked him out; Heat disagree

February 11th, 2013 | By love not hate

Lil Wayne has a song called Troublemaker. Surprisingly, it’s not about his attendance at NBA games.

The rapper left the Miami Heat-Los Angeles Lakers game Sunday afternoon and tweeted he was forced to leave because he was rooting for the Lakers. But Heat spokeswoman Lorrie-Ann Diaz told USA TODAY Sports in an e-mail that Lil Wayne was not kicked out but instead chose to leave.

“So I’m @ da Heat game right, rootin 4 da Lakers kuz dats my team & would u believe they got police 2 make me leave?! Wow!” Lil Wayne tweeted at 5:01 p.m. ET.

GAME: LeBron drops 30 again as Heat top Lakers

One fan who was at the game said security approached Lil Wayne after he made a gesture.

“Random guy yelled at Lil Wayne at #MiamiHEAT game. Weezy looked back, gave him a mean stare & gestured he had a gun,” tweeted Danny Vega, who said he was at the game and sitting near Lil Wayne. “Weezy just got into argument with security at the #MiamiHEAT game. He got kicked out for gun gesture.”

Diaz, the Heat spokeswoman, did not respond to a question about whether security approached Lil Wayne before he left.

Lil Wayne cited racism when he was not allowed into a Western Conference finals game last year, but Oklahoma City Thunder spokesman Dan Mahoney said the issue was the rapper didn’t have a ticket to the sold-out game. He then attended an NBA Finals game in Oklahoma City, apparently smoothing over any issues with Thunder staff.

Blizzard headed to NY!

February 8th, 2013 | By love not hate

”"

A potentially historic winter storm was closing in on New England on Friday with tens of millions of people in its sights. The storm has canceled thousands of flights and could bring 2 feet of snow to cities like Boston.

The icy rage will commence Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts, and will last into Saturday.

Snow could lock some residents indoors over the weekend.

In addition, it will produce high winds and stir up trouble at sea, pushing ocean waves onto land and flooding New England coastlines.

“It’s going to be one of the strongest winter storms we’ve seen in a very long time,” CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.

But by early next week, much of the Northeast will probably re-emerge from underneath the white blanket, Javaheri said, as temperatures in many places are expected to go above 40 degrees.

The gathering snowstorm is driving droves of New Englanders into shops to gather supplies, then dash home to stock their cupboards, batten down the hatches and brace for possible record-breaking snow.

When Reading, Massachusetts, resident Elizabeth Frazier stocked up on supplies late Thursday, shoppers were buying up the store. She grabbed the last bottles of water in sight.

“It’s a zoo in there,” she said. “There’s nothing left on the shelves,” she told CNN affiliate WHDH.

Motorists lined up to fill their tanks at gas stations in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Who is in its path

The storm is on a trajectory reminiscent of the path that Superstorm Sandy took but will also include areas farther north.

It is poised to deliver harsh blows to regions that already took a lot of punishment in the fall.

The blizzard is predicted to smother some places where the superstorm left behind the deepest scars — from the New Jersey shoreline through the boroughs of New York City and throughout Connecticut.

Forecasts call for the worst snowfall to extend into eastern Massachusetts and reach up the Northeast shoreline into Maine.

The area is very densely populated.

Power companies and public works are shoring up their resources, and some states have closed public schools.

The National Weather Service has predicted widespread white-out conditions that will impede drivers’ visibility.

Airlines have already canceled more than 3,200 flights to and from the affected region, and Amtrak has canceled many trips in the Northeast corridor. Some states are warning motorists not to drive once the storm hits.

Passengers filed into New York’s La Guardia Airport on Friday before dawn to flee the coming mayhem. Many rescheduled their flights to leave before its arrival.

James Rubino was originally booked on a flight to Miami on Friday evening to see family, but the airline canceled the trip. After hours of calling the airline, he was able to get on a much earlier flight.

“I got up at 3:02 a.m. and just ran, got my son, and we were out the door,” Rubino said. He plunked down $200 for a cab to the airport to make the new flight on time.

The Great Blizzard of 1978 in Boston

Boston’s public works filled trucks with sand Thursday to spread on roads, and deployed snowplows and 600 snow removers.

“We are hardy New Englanders,” said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, “and used to these types of storms.”

But the city could see flakes falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, and the storm has already drawn comparisons to the Great Blizzard of 1978, when thousands were stranded as fast-moving snowdrifts blanketed highways and left several people dead.

Putting toughness aside, Menino told Bostonians to “use common sense” and “stay off the streets of our city.” “Basically, stay home.”

“All vehicles must be off the roads by noon on Friday,” Massachusetts’ emergency management agency said. “Boston’s public rail system will halt service at 3:30 p.m.”

This storm is predicted to dump about 29 inches on Boston in one day. The Great Blizzard dumped 27 inches on its worst day, Javaheri said, but it hovered over the area longer than this storm is expected to.

In addition, “the winds are going to be howling,” he said. The snow won’t fall down but blow in sideways, causing particularly high drifts.

The most severe weather is expected to hit Massachusetts between 2 and 5 p.m. Friday.

Snow flurries had already begun over Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Thursday.

Snow will be widespread and deep

The rest of New England will see heavy snow into Saturday, the National Weather Service said, which could reach blizzard intensity in places. A wet system rising from the Gulf Coast is colliding with a polar front rolling in from the Midwest to produce the whopping winter storm.

Residents from New Jersey to Maine probably will be digging themselves out of a foot or so of snow, the National Weather Service predicts, with more than 2½ feet falling in some spots.

Snowfalls could last as long as 36 hours in some areas, breaking local accumulation records. The weather service expects the storm to fling heavy snow across the Great Lakes as far away as Michigan and Wisconsin.

In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the timing of the storm could be worse for municipal workers.

“If it’s going to happen, having it happen Friday overnight into Saturday is probably as good timing as we could have,” he said. “The sanitation department then has the advantage of being able to clean the streets when there’s normally less traffic.”

Wind-whipped shores

In shades of Sandy, gales will whip up waves along the Atlantic Coast, triggering small-craft advisories as far south as Georgia, the National Weather Service said. Hurricane-force winds are predicted to churn up offshore maritime tempests — particularly from New Jersey to Massachusetts — with waves cresting at up to 30 feet at the height of the storm.

Coastal flooding is possible “from Boston northward,” the weather service said. But on Long Island, power companies are also warning that the Atlantic’s waters could come ashore there, too.

The combination of snow and gusts as high as 60 to 75 mph will also knock out electric power, the National Weather Service said.

After Superstorm Sandy left much of Long Island without power for days, power company National Grid is working to prevent a second act to that tragedy.

It is adding hundreds of extra crew members to more than 500 linemen already on site for the Long Island Power Authority.

The storm could cut power to more than 100,000 customers on Long Island alone, National Grid said.

Queen Elizabeth final section leaves Portsmouth

February 7th, 2013 | By love not hate

The “forward island” of HMS Queen Elizabeth, known as Upper Block 07, contains the main bridge of the ship.

It was moved to the outer perimeter of the BAE Systems shipyard by barge.

The forward island earlier left Portsmouth Naval Base for its sea voyage to Rosyth, where the ship’s final assembly will take place.

The island, which weighs 680 tonnes, is scheduled to be lifted on to HMS Queen Elizabeth in March.

The vessel, which is mainly being constructed in Portsmouth and on the Clyde in Glasgow, will have two islands – the second will operate as an aircraft control tower.

HMS Prince of Wales is the next aircraft carrier to be delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, which consists of BAE Systems, Thales UK, Babcock and UK Ministry of Defence.

The navy said the 65,000 tonne Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, which will be based in Portsmouth, will be the “centre piece of the UK’s military capability”.

Fashionista leaves Louis Vuitton bag containing ‘suicide diary’ naming five girls banned from funeral

Tragic: Ashley Anne Riggitano, 22, leapt from George Washington Bridge at 4:40 p.m. yesterdayTragic: Ashley Anne Riggitano, 22, leapt from George Washington Bridge yesterday

A 22-year-old fashionista jumped to her death from a New York bridge, leaving behind a designer handbag with a suicide note including a list of five girls she did not want to attend her funeral.

Ashley Anne Riggitano leapt from George Washington Bridge at 4:40 p.m. yesterday into the Hudson River.

Her Louis Vuitton bag contained handwritten notes singling out the five people who had made her unhappy.

‘All my other ‘friends’ are in it for gossip,’ she wrote according to the New York Post.

She also mentioned a man who she was not happy with, and although he was permitted to attend her funeral, she added that she hoped he gets what he deserves’ when he gets there.

The newspaper reported that Miss Riggitano may have had a history of problems and tried to commit suicide at least once before.

Medication, including Adderall and Klonopin, was found in her bag, according to sources.

Adderall is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or narcolepsy, while Klonopin is used to control seizures in epilepsy and for the treatment of panic disorder.

The newspaper reported that the people referred to in the notes appeared to be friends from college or work and that Miss Riggitano may have been bullied by her fashion friends.

Miss Riggitano had been working as intern for the New York-based jewelry and fashion designer Alex Woo.

She started her own business, called Missfits, where she hand crafted jewelry made out of semi precious gemstones with her best friend Victoria Van Thunen.

On her company’s Facebook page in the ‘About Me’ section she wrote:

‘My name is Ashley Riggitano or those who know me know I go by Ashley Anne. I am originally from Bergen county NJ but have moved on to downtown Manhattan. I study fashion merchandising at Lim College. I have always had a strong passion for fashion especially jewelry.’

She adds that she is ‘Creative, Wild, carefree, loves the color pink, the beach, and skinny vanilla latte.’

Her Facebook relationship status lists her as ‘single’

The budding designer graduated from Laboratory Institute of Merchandising in Manhattan this year.

She had interned at some high-profile fashion companies including Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Her family in Paramus, NJ, have not commented on her death yet.

Miss Van Thunen wrote on her Facebook page yesterday:  ‘Those who incessantly blame others as the cause of their issues should perhaps take a step back and reevaluate these situations. The common thread may be that “they” aren’t the problem, but rather that YOU are.’
