Mother kept her pregnancy a secret, gave birth to twins on the toilet, smothered them and dumped their tiny bodies in a laundry basket

Jailed: Lindsey Lowe, now 26, faces to murder charges for her newborn twin sons but prosecutors are not seeking the death penaltyJailed: Lindsey Lowe, now 26, faces to murder charges for her newborn twin sons but prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty

The mother who gave birth to twin boys on the toilet, smothered them and dumped their bodies in a laundry basket sobbed in court yesterday as the jury heard disturbing details about how officers found the cold, dead newborns wrapped in bloody towels.

Two police officers choked up while testifying about how they discovered the twin boys after the father of Lindsey Lowe, 26, from Hendersonville, Tennessee, called 911 after making the grizzly discovery.

She gave birth in her parents’ affluent home secretly in September 2011 and covered the newborn twin boy’s mouths with her hand to stifle the screams so no one would hear.

Officer Jeremy Fentress took the stand on Tuesday and described entering the bedroom of defendant Lindsey Lowe and pulling back a bloody towel.

He stopped speaking for a few seconds, then told the court: ‘After I pulled the bloody towel back, I saw a deceased infant.’

Fentress said he touched the baby with two fingers and found the infant was cold and not breathing.

The newborn was the first of two found on September 14, 2011, in the two-story home of the upper-middle-class neighborhood in Hendersonville, about 20 miles northeast of Nashville.

The second baby was found by Sgt James Garrett, who described getting ready to lay the first baby down on a bed ‘softly and gently’ before he discovered the umbilical cord, still attached to something deeper in the basket.

Fentress held the body of the first baby while Garrett pulled aside a sheet to uncover the second one – who was also dead. Garrett said he placed the first baby back in the basket beside his brother.

Defense: Her attorney John Pellegrin, seen at her side in an earlier hearing, is arguing that she did not know that she was pregnant and was not of sound mind when she smothered the newborns to deathDefense: Her attorney John Pellegrin, seen at her side in an earlier hearing, is arguing that she did not know that she was pregnant and was not of sound mind when she smothered the newborns to death

Lowe, now 26, is facing two counts of first-degree murder at her trial, which opened Monday.

She had told police she gave birth to the twin boys in the bathroom of the home on the night of September 12, 2011, and smothered them so that her parents would not hear their cries.

Lowe’s parents found one of the babies two days later and alerted police.

Both sides in the case agree that Lowe did not act like a pregnant woman in the days and weeks leading up to the birth.

Defense attorney John Pellegrin told jurors Lowe was a bridesmaid in a wedding the weekend before the birth where she was dancing, laughing and posing for pictures.

The night before the births, one of her sorority sisters stayed at her house, even sleeping in Lowe’s bed, he said. And yet no one knew she was pregnant.

Prosecutors suggested that a lack of preparations showed Lowe never intended for the babies to live.

‘Officers, during their search of the house, found no evidence of an expectation of life,’ Assistant District Attorney Blanton said during opening statements.

‘There were no diapers, no pacis (pacifiers), no blankets, no car seat.’

They pointed out that Lowe had been engaged to her college sweetheart in 2011, but had gotten pregnant when she had an affair with another man.

‘Miss Lowe made no preparation for the births of these children because no one was going to interfere with her life,’ Blanton said in opening statements.

But defense attorneys argued that the case was not so simple.

‘Lindsey Lowe was pregnant, but she refused to accept it, her mind refused to accept it,’ Pellegrin said.

He argued that Lowe didn’t realize what was happening when she started to give birth in the bathroom.

‘She thinks her internal organs are coming out,’ he told the jury.

Family, friends and church members have come to Lowe’s defense.

In earlier hearings, Lowe’s father Mark Lowe described her as a ‘model daughter,’ saying she moved back in with her family after graduating from Western Kentucky University in 2008 and took care of her mother, who had a brain tumor.

The final witness Tuesday was Detective Steve Malach, who interviewed Lowe after the babies were discovered.

He testified how Lowe told him she gave birth and then put the babies in a laundry basket.

When he asked if she ever checked on them, ‘she said she couldn’t face it,’ he told jurors.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Lowe could face life in prison without parole. Prosecutors had said previously they would not seek the death penalty.

@Beyonce Spends 31st Birthday on Yacht in France With Jay-Z & Blue Ivy

September 5th, 2012 | By

Beyonce got plenty of wishes from loved ones — not to  mention fans worldwide — on her 31st birthday on Tuesday, Sept. 4.  But the  Grammy-winning superstar celebrated the occasion with just her immediate fam:  hubby Jay-Z and baby daughter Blue Ivy, 9 months.

New photos reveal that the “I Was Here” singer spent her birthday aboard a  private yacht cruising through the Mediterranean Sea in the South of France.

Going makeup-free and wearing a nautical-style blue-and-white outfit, Beyonce  sipped white wine alongside her husband of four years Jay-Z (real name: Shawn  Carter), 42.  Looking cuter and more grown-up than ever, little girl Blue showed  off a full head of curly hair and she played with her mom and dad during their  luxurious sail.

Beyonce’s pals took over her website on Tuesday — festooning the site with  handwritten birthday wishes from the likes of BFF Gwyneth  Paltrow, her mom Tina Knowles, sister Solange, former bandmate Michelle  Williams and many others.

Sheryl Underwood Gives Props To Whoopi And Sherri

August 8th, 2012 | By

Sheryl Underwood
has been in the comedy trenches for a minute.

On her grind since the late 80s, the standup comic and longtime radio veteran hit the career jackpot last year when CBS’ daytime chat show “The Talk” added her as one of its five co-hosts.

The plum gig, however, came after nearly three decades of hustle on the black comedy circuit, which led to multiple appearances on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” and BET’s “Comic View,” and bit parts in such feature films like “I Got the Hookup” and “Beauty Shop.”

“The Talk” is definitely a feather in the cap of a long journey. And ironically, Underwood, 48, believes she “would not have even been on the radar” for the show had it not been for the early support of her ABC rivals Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd of “The View.”

“I did ‘The View’ twice. I would always go see it when I was working for Caroline’s Comedy Club,” she told EURweb exclusively at the TCA press tour last week. “I happened to be in the audience and Sherri introduced me to the audience, and Whoopi said, ‘Joy , you need to put her on your Comedy Corner. That’s how I got on ‘The View.’”

After performing on co-host Joy Behar’s segment, Underwood said ‘View’ executive producer Bill Geddie asked her if she’d ever been auditioned or interviewed for his show.

“I said no,” the comic said she told Geddes. “I don’t think my agent at that time had submitted me.”

Needless to say, Underwood doesn’t have that agent anymore. In fact, she is currently doing her Hollywood thing – including the launch of her own production company – with neither an agent, nor a manager.

“I just decided to do some things for myself, and get me a good lawyer who’s an accountant and business manager,” she said. “So when we got the call here, we didn’t really believe it was CBS because I’m always the bridesmaid and never the bride. We were just shocked that it happened.”

Watch Whitney Houston’s Final Video “Celebrate” [VIDEO]

June 30th, 2012 | By

Get up and get ready to dance to the catchy Celebrate music video, the first single off the upcoming Sparklesoundtrack (out July 31).

It is Whitney Houston’s final recorded performance, and it features Sparkle cast members including Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. Houston plays the single mom to the aspiring vocal trio in the film, opening in August.

According to Sparks, who recorded her parts of the song separately from Houston because of scheduling conflicts, the concept behind the video was to throw a party in the late diva’s honor.

“When we did the song, we planned on (the video) being Whitney and me,” Sparks, who plays Houston’s daughter in the film, told BET. “But she’s not here, so we wanted it to be a tribute to her. So it’s fun, upbeat and exciting,” she said.

“We’re all just having a good time (and the premise is) they all come over to my house singing along to Whitney’s music. And we’re missing her and celebrating her as well. It’s actually pretty simple, but when you watch it and hear her voice along with it, it makes it so much more.”

Watch the video below. “Sparkle” will arrive in theaters on Aug. 17.

Will Smith Disses His “Hollywood Ex” Sheree Fletcher [AUDIO]

June 30th, 2012 | By

Vh1′s “Hollywood Exes” debuted this week and I was set on not watching it, but once I realized the cast included the exes of R. Kelly, Prince, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and more, I was convinced that this show would be juicy.

And boy, was I right! The drama hasn’t even lifted off the ground on the actual show, but there’s already delicious morsels of drama bubbling up from three years ago! Will Smith’s Lost And Found album features a song called “Holy Roller” that goes in on his ex, Sheree Fletcher–the mother of his first child, Trey. Fletcher is now married to a pastor, in which Will references heavily in the song.

Here comes the future of IRIS Scanning

June 21st, 2012 | By love not hate

Dallas International Airport is trialling a  new scheme which should allow passengers to breeze straight through from the  car-park to the runway without barely having to lift a finger.

Well, perhaps one finger – for the airport  will use fingerprint scanners and iris scanners to hopefully remove the need for  any security or queues.

There are two drawbacks: you will need to  give your biometric data – basically a scan of your eye and a fingerprint – and  you will need to stump up a $179 fee.

But frequent travellers through the airport  may find themselves as pioneers for something which may make the stress of the  airports a thing of the past.

Check in and check-in: The fingerprint scanners could perhaps do away with the unwieldy queues at airportsCheck in and check-in: The fingerprint scanners,  currently being installed at Dallas International, could perhaps do away with  the unwieldy queues at airports

Passengers would walk with their carry-ons  through a ‘screening tunnel’,  where they undergo a screening carried out  electronically.

While that may sound all ’1984′, it does  remove the three or so security checks carried out in the usual way.

So no more taking off of shoes and belts,  removing laptops from bags.

Mark Clifton, vice president of products and  services for SRI  International, a Californian form that develops scanners,  told USA Today:  ‘Instead of using a card or a pass, you would  simply glance at a spot on the turnstile and it would open the gate if you were  qualified to go  through.

‘It’s very fast.’

The biometric firm CLEAR announced yesterday  that that it will add the ‘pre-check’ security lines to Dallas in the coming  months.

The cost is a pretty expensive $179 (£113) a  year and applies to some flights including with American Airlines, Delta and  Virgin Airways.

According to USA Today, ‘if screeners notice  anything suspicious, a passenger would still be pulled aside and possibly patted  down.’

The site also reported that the The Federal  Aviation Administration believes the number of passengers flying inside the USA  will nearly double in the next 20 years to 1.2 billion flights a  year.

Cedric’s Got Soul

June 20th, 2012 | By

Cedric the Entertainer seems like the kind of guy that you know – he could easily be your uncle, your father, your cousin or your brother. Maybe that’s why people enjoy him so much. Apparently, he’s got a face and personality made for TV because he almost always has a job. This year is no different. He and Niecy Nash of “Reno 911” and “Clean House” fame are starring together in a new TV land sitcom “Soul Man.”

On the show, Cedric plays Rev. Boyce “The Voice” Ballantine was a superstar singer who gets the “call” from the Lord and decides to give up his secular career for a new one as the minister in his father’s St. Louis church. This means moving from the high life in Las Vegas to the more modest one in St. Louis. In fact, St. Louis is Cedric’s hometown, so he convinced the show producer’s to have art imitate life.

“When we were talking about the new series, they asked if I wanted to be from Cleveland, but I wasn’t really comfortable with that,” Cedric told the St.Louis Post Dispatch. “I said, let’s make it St. Louis, so the setup is that I leave Las Vegas and come home to St. Louis.”

As one of the show’s executive producers, Cedric has a hand in just about everything including co-writing the show’s pilot. But when he cast Niecy Nash, he was unaware that she, too is from St. Louis. And oddly enough, Nash’s first husband was a R&B singer turned pastor, she told the Dispatch.

“Soul Man” which debuts tonight at 10 p.m. is set for 12 episodes on TV Land. Watch the preview here.

Celebrity Swingers Party Shut Down!!!!

June 20th, 2012 | By love not hate

A sex party was ousted from SoHo’s exclusive  Mondrian Hotel after security quarreled with the party’s scantily-clad  attendees.

The School of Sex’s SiN White Party went off  without a hitch, organizers told the MailOnline, until Mondrian personnel  started trying to snap pictures of one of their celebrity guests.

Confidentiality is of the utmost importance  to the underground swinger’s club, so after repeated attempts by security to  gain access to the event, they shut it down – and were asked to  leave.

Loving You: Loving You: Confidentiality is of the utmost importance  to the underground swinger’s club, so after repeated attempts by security to  gain access to the event, they shut it down – and were asked to leave

RowdyRowdy: Hotel security said there were no ‘paparazzi  style’ photographs taken, only a part that got out of control

The School of Sex hosts underground parties  for amorous couples looking for a little adventure once a month.

‘Through a careful process of selection, we  successfully congregate an amazingly sexy group of young, attractive,  open-minded and intelligent people with a common interest — to explore and  indulge their erotic pleasures in a shared space,’ the club says on their  website.

The parties are governed by four rules: 1.  Ladies make the rules 2. No means no 3. Men cannot approach women 4. Members  only.

On Saturday evening, they hosted a White  Party, where attendees were instructed to wear white to visit the Mondrian’s  SoHo penthouse.

Dozens of partygoers paid $100 a ticket for a  couple or $50 for a single woman’s entrance.

Select single men were invited, but hotel  security was not.

‘The hotel security wanted to gain access  because we had a famous celebrity show up and they thought it would be a great  chance to expose that information,’ Jasmine from the School of Sex told the  MailOnline.

InvitedInvited: The School of Sex’s SiN White Party went off  without a hitch until Mondrian personnel started trying to snap pics of one of  their celebrity guests

‘Some of the guests actually saw the hotel  security try to snap pictures of our guests paparazzi style when people were  exiting.’

The identities of the partygoers is always  strictly confidential and guests are encouraged to wear masks  and use aliases for the evening. When  hotel security started getting rowdy, the School of Sex security shot into  action.

‘Some of the  guests actually saw the  hotel security try to snap pictures of our guests  paparazzi style when  people were exiting. We guess these prudes have never  heard of a threesome.’

Jasmine

‘At that point, our own security (ex Navy  Seal) grabbed the iPhone the hotel security was using and wiped the picture,’  Jasmine said.

But the harassment didn’t end there. Jasmine  told the MailOnline that hotel personnel followed the swingers to their private  rooms, which cost between $245 and $1,200.

‘Guests also reported that upon retiring to  their rooms, the hotel security followed them and demanded that any room with  more than 2 people was in violation of hotel policy of not allowing “parties” in  rooms,’ Jasmine said.

But hotel security told the MailOnline  that  a vastly different evening unfolded and there were no ‘paparazzi  style’  photographs taken.

It's On: Dozens of partygoers paid $100 a ticket for a couple, or $50 for a single woman's entranceIt’s On: Dozens of partygoers paid $100 a ticket for a  couple, or $50 for a single woman’s entrance

‘That never happened,’ Mondrian SoHo security  guard told the MailOnline. ‘I was there.  We did not take any pictures at all. We didn’t even have our phones out  either.’

Mr Ramos said that trouble started when  someone complained that the party was getting out of control with too many  guests.

‘It was supposed to be a film shoot for ten  people. That’s what it was booked for,’ Mr Ramos said.

Instead of a few people, dozens more showed  up.

‘It just kept multiplying,’ he said. ‘We did  our job and we went upstairs. They didn’t even let us inside the  room.’

Jasmine said that the party was indeed a  photo shoot, but not exclusively.

‘The hotel signed a contract with us that the  event would include but was not limited to a photoshoot. We actually had a  photoshoot with a famous NY photographer who wanted to highlight some of our  sexiest female members in lingerie,’ she said.

Needless to say, after the run-in with  security, the swingers’ club called it quits.

‘We actually shut the party voluntarily and  took about 30 minutes to wind down so every could have a chance to calmly say  their goodbyes and leave,’ Jasmine said.

‘We guess these prudes have never heard of a  threesome.’

THE HEAT IS ON FIRE!

June 15th, 2012 | By love not hate

OKLAHOMA CITY — “Resilient” is not a word most people use to describe the  Miami Heat, but since I’m not allowed to repeat the words they do use, let’s  start with that one. In one of the toughest road venues in the NBA — season on  the line, world ready to pounce — the Heat were tougher, stronger and just  grittier than the Oklahoma City Thunder.

At the end, it looked like the Heat escaped with a 100-96 win in Game 2 to  even the NBA Finals. There was Kevin Durant, ball in hand, team down two,  releasing a shot he so often makes, and possibly getting fouled by LeBron James.  The shot missed. No foul was called. This being the NBA in 2012, it immediately  became the most outrageous bad call since British Prime Minster Neville  Chamberlain declared “peace for our time” in 1938, but really, there are worse  NBA calls in every game. If that happened in the second quarter nobody would  remember it by halftime.

The Thunder and Heat were not fooled. They know that Miami was the better  team in Game 2. The obsession over this particular foul call is annoying because  it just adds to the narrative that everything is handed to the Heat on a  diamond-studded platter carried by Jim Gray. And that was not the story of this  game.

If you can strip away all of your feelings about the Heat, good or bad,  hopefully you can appreciate what Miami did. The Thunder are younger, deeper and  just as athletic. But here was Chris Bosh, still coming back from an injury,  grabbing 15 rebounds, and here was Dwyane Wade, who might be injured himself,  putting up extra shots before tip-off and scoring 24 points, and here was Shane  Battier, who waited forever to go deep into the playoffs, sinking five of seven  three-pointers.

“We’re not the best passing team in the history of basketball, and I’ve let  people know that on my team,” Battier said with a laugh. “I’ve told guys, ‘Give  me good passes and I’m going to make some shots.’”

These guys aren’t the aging Celtics, but they aren’t young, either. They have  struggled to figure out how to play together, and to deal with what coach Erik  Spoelstra calls “noise.” Well, they are figuring it out. That doesn’t mean they  will win the series. But this looked like the team that Pat Riley envisioned in  the summer of 2010.

James was the best player on the floor, playing everything from point guard  to power forward. Miami’s defense was relentless and disruptive. Bosh said he  “absolutely” thought this was a must-win game, and Miami embraced that pressure.  That has not always been the case with this team. Perhaps you’ve heard about  that.

Miami led 18-2 and then tried to get James involved. The Thunder  played catch-up the whole way after that, and Oklahoma City almost did make it  all the way back, but oddly, that made Miami’s win even more impressive to  me.

I recognize that it might have looked different on TV. But in the building,  with the Thunder crowd going nuts and Durant also going nuts … well, wilting  would have been easy. The Heat sent a message to Oklahoma City: We will not  fold. You want this title, you’ll have to take it.

Now, back to that non-call in the final minute. A bizarre series of events  led to it. Wade was stripped at midcourt. Durant got a wide-open three in  transition. Then Miami did something silly: It bled the clock and let James take  a three-pointer as the shot clock wound down with no screen, no action, no  anything. It was bad strategy, because the Thunder would have plenty of time to  score anyway, and up two, Miami needed a basket more than it needed an extra  three or four seconds. Plus, James and Wade had been getting to the rim all  night. Sometimes the Heat offense doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Anyway, that led to the Durant shot, and the James non-call. But James still  had to hit two free throws to finish the game, and he did. He was 12 for 12 from  the line.

For all the amazing plays from James — the leaning bank shot, the bullet  passes to open shooters — the Heat cannot win the title on highlights. Miami  needs guts. In what is starting to look like an all-time-great NBA Finals, Miami  showed guts.

Once Miami built its big early lead, you knew the Thunder would make some  kind of comeback, and the only question was whether Miami was tough enough to  withstand it. The Heat did.

It was not a perfect night. Miami probably should have gone harder at Durant  when he had five fouls — Battier said they wanted to — but that could have  taken the Heat out of their offense completely, because Durant was not guarding  James, Wade or Bosh at that point. Miami could have played a little better in  the fourth quarter.

But champions don’t have to play like champions all the time. They just have  to believe they are champions all the time. The Heat can’t win this series on  talent. Battier said, “The effort it took to win this one game was monumental,”  and the Heat will need that kind of effort the rest of the way to win. But this  year, they know it, and they know how to produce it. And that is why they can  win.

Mary J. Blige Gets Bomb Rushed By Strippers

June 6th, 2012 | By love not hate

The film adaptation of Broadway’s 80s-themed musical “Rock of Ages” will arrive in theaters this month with some of the decades biggest hair band hits performed by an all-star cast that includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and a strip club owner played by Mary J. Blige.

In order for the 90s Queen of Hip Hop Soul to be believable as Justice Charlier, the owner of the Venus Club – and known to break out in rock songs from the 80s [see clip below] – Mary J. said she had to do some heavy research.

“I had to find out – how old is this woman? Who is she? Why is she in the strip club? Does she trust men anymore? Does she hate men? Is she gay? What is she?” said Mary J. during interviews for the film in Los Angeles on Sunday. “I definitely had to go look at some different women and talk to different women and even do some method acting, like going to strip clubs myself, just to feel that out.”

Blige says that during her research at the shake joint, she actually got got bum-rushed by the strippers when they found out she was in the building.

Janet Jackson Announces New Documentary Film

June 6th, 2012 | By love not hate

Queen of Pop Janet Jackson may be taking her time with her musical comeback, yet that hasn’t stopped her from re-diving into the world of film.

Instead of acting, though, the 46 year old year old’s latest project sees her executive producing a new documentary filmed christened ‘Truth’.

Set to begin production this Summer, the docu-film will chronicle the the lives of trans and non gendered people around the world and their epic struggle for equality.

Jackson, who is a long-term ally of the LGBT community, and past recipient of GLAAD Media Vanguard Award, is excited to lead this project and will be extensively involved in the production, as well as conducting some of the on-camera interviews.
“All people are very important to me. I’ve been fortunate to make friends and learn about very different lives.  ‘Truth‘ is our small chance to ask that you try and understand someone who lives their life in a way that is a little bit different from yours, even though all of our hearts are the same.  We want to stop the hate and find understanding.”
Speaking on Jackson’s involvement with the project, its director says director Robert Jason said:
“Janet Jackson will take us on a visually innovative, cerebral journey through the turbulent lives of transgendered people of all ages around the world and their epic struggle for equality. This film will highlight landmark mainstream stories and provide a glimpse at others that will change the gender landscape of the world forever. Just as it is hard to believe that there ever was a time when different components of society were required to use separate drinking fountains, it is as incredible that one’s gender expression remains just such a target for discrimination.”
*****
‘Truth’ serves as Janet’s second executive producing title following ‘Janet Jackson: The Rhythm Nation Compilation’.  Her current production slate also includes an untitled project for Lionsgate.

Pusha T lets loose on Drake in new rap, and Wayne comes to rescue!

May 24th, 2012 | By love not hate

Lil Wayne and Pusha T

YMCMB and G.O.O.D. Music are at odds once again.  Lil Wayne is lashing out at Pusha T after the release of his controversial song “Exodus 23:1,” which seemingly takes aim at Drake.

The G.O.O.D. Music MC fires subliminal shots at Wayne’s protégé and his YMCMB crew on The-Dream-assisted track.  “Beef is when you hide behind them other ni**as/ But they ain’t killas, they ain’t pulling them triggas/ Fuck ni**as,” raps the former Clipse member.

He continues, “Contract all fucked up/ I guess that means you all fucked up/ You signed to one ni**a, that’s signed to another ni**a, that’s signed to three ni**as/ Now that’s bad luck/ Damn that shit even the odds now/ You better off selling this hard now/ You call it living out your dreams/ You can’t fly without your wings.”

It didn’t take long before the Young Money chief jumped in to defend his family, tweeting, “Fuk pusha t and anybody that love em.”

Pusha previously came at the Canadian rapper on last year’s freestyle “Don’t Fuck Wit Me.” “Rappers on their sophomores, actin’ like they boss lords/ Fame such a funny thing for sure, when ni**as start believing all them encores,” he rapped.

YMCMB and G.O.O.D. Music have had their differences in the past, most notably with Common and Drake’s notorious battle earlier this year.

Boys in South Africa gang rape face full prosecution

April 26th, 2012 | By love not hate

Three of four minors accused of taking part in a brutal videotaped gang rape of a teenager will face full prosecution, a spokesman for a South African court said Wednesday.

The boys appeared in court Wednesday — along with three others who are not minors — to apply for bail. The seven suspects are between the ages of 13 and 19.

A bail hearing will be held May 3 for the minors and June 20 for the adults, said the spokesman, Mthunzi Mhaga.

It is unlikely that the suspects, accused of a crime that has shocked many in South Africa, will be granted bail, officials have said.

An eighth suspect — a man who was found with the victim — is scheduled to appear in court on May 4, court officials said.

Attack on disabled girl angers S. Africa

Defending the defenseless in South Africa

South African gang-rape attack filmed

The images of the assault of the 17-year-old girl, believed to be mentally ill, swept across the Internet last week and touched a nerve in South Africa.

The shocking footage shows the girl pleading for her attackers to stop, and it has some activists saying it is an example of the country’s problem with rape.

The girl went missing on March 21. Police suspect she was kidnapped and turned into a sex slave.

The cell phone video of her gang rape surfaced and went viral among schoolchildren in Soweto, a vast township near Johannesburg.

The Daily Sun, a local tabloid, alerted police about the attack after a concerned mother whose daughter was watching the video handed it over to the newspaper.

Police embarked on a search for the girl and the people in the video.

Eight suspects have been arrested and charged with kidnapping and raping the teen. Seven of them were seen on the video; the other was a 37-year-old man found with the girl last week.

A woman is raped every 26 seconds in South Africa, according to local aid groups.

More than 60,000 cases of sexual assault were reported in the year to March 2011, down from 70,000 in 2008, police said.

Women’s rights activist Lisa Vetten says in the province of Gauteng, where Johannesburg is located, one in every five rapes is a gang rape.

“Rape is a young man’s crime,” she said. “It’s a bit of a performance for them, showing off to each other how macho they are. We need to teach our young men that you can be masculine in ways that do not involve violence and degrading women.”

The mother of the 17-year-old has said this was not the first time her daughter has been raped.

She was raped in 2009 and 2010, and authorities have done little to address the issue in the past, the mother said.

“It’s 2012 now, and I’m still waiting for DNA results,” she said.

After the girl was found and as the news of the video emerged, the government placed her in a safe house — a place where she can attend school and socialize in a secure environment.

“They are coming now because things have turned out this way,” the mother said. “They shouldn’t pretend as if they have been standing up for me. They never stood up for me.”

Students chow down on cyber security weaknesses

April 25th, 2012 | By love not hate

A group of hackers gathering under one roof might not sound like such a good thing, but they’re far from what you would call cyber crooks.

They call themselves the Hungry Hungry Hackers, or H3, and they aren’t hungry for marbles or breaching others’ personal information. They’re students hungry to learn to protect digital assets and information systems. They seek weak points in a network built for them on Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus, then try to strengthen them – it’  a safe, ethical space for students to test their skills in cyber-security.

CNN Geek Out spoke to Toni Walden and Joshua L. Davis from Hungry Hungry Hackers about hacking culture, H3 and their Hungry Hungry Hackers Campus Challenge, known as H3C2, which unfolded earlier this month. This is an edited transcript of the conversation.

CNN Geek Out: So what is Hungry Hungry Hackers all about and how did it start?

Walden: It seemed like students really wanted to learn more about information security. So a bunch of us together at (the Georgia Tech Research Institute), and with some help from (the Georgia Tech Information Security Center),  Georgia Tech Association for Computing Machinery and Georgia Tech Gray Hat, came together to create a series of different challenges for students to engage in. H3 is about creating a hacking platform where students can learn and grow their skill in a fun and safe way, and it’s about sharing that common interest we have when it comes to information security.

We think school provides a really good theoretical understanding of problems one might see in the field, but what lacks is a hands-on perspective. We just want to offer students with ethical and fun experiences.

CNN Geek Out: Is there a system you set up for students to get a better hands-on experience?

Walden: We essentially provide students a safe platform for them to hack. And they’re simply attacking a system that we personally have set up. It’s our network, it’s all our equipment, it’s our building, so we’re essentially saying to students that it’s OK for them to break into this network to figure out where vulnerabilities lie in order to make things more secure. It’s kind of funny because if you want to make something secure, you really have to understand how to break it before you can understand how to protect against potential breaks. So we try to set up things that can challenge everyone.

CNN Geek Out: So what exactly does it mean to be a “hacker?”

Davis: In the original term, it’s really seen in a more constructive context. It’s someone that’s kind of like a MacGyver. You hack stuff together to make it work. Now popular culture has kind of evolved it to the word “cracker,” which is someone who is breaking into some system for the sake of gaining access to information or some resource.

Hungry Hungry Hackers hosted a competition this month.

CNN Geek Out: Would you say there’s a misconception of hackers?

Davis: Most assuredly. It’s a really complicated mix and sometimes it’s difficult to demystify those misconceptions associated to hackers because of popular culture and movies. People might have this perception that all hackers are just automatically bad, but when you look at good information security focused on education and learning how to actually secure an enterprise, it’s a great thing. Granted, to make things secure, hackers have to “think like the bad guy,” but the ultimate outcome of that is that we are able to build stronger cyber defenses.

The communication that we have and the Internet were built on trust… and so we didn’t necessarily think about humans manipulating for self-gain. A lot of this infrastructure of communication has to be re-examined and the hacker community here does it’s best to ensure ethical practices. I mean, if you don’t have the authority to break into the system, it’s illegal. Hacking is not a malicious culture. It’s more of a curious one.

CNN Geek Out: How would you describe the culture and community of hacking?

Davis: When you watch a room of hackers hacking, it’s not very entertaining. Security research can appear quite boring or really sterile. But it can also be very counterculture. It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s geeky. Sometimes there can be techno music, of sorts, playing in the background, but that of course varies from groups to people. It’s a very diverse culture though. The security community is hardcore nerd. Don’t know if there’s an exact way to describe it, but in the hacker community, nothing is sacred and everything can be made fun of. What’s fascinating about security culture is it’s all about protecting value that’s digital.

CNN Geek Out: What is the motivation behind H3 and what is the Hungry Hungry Hacker Campus Challenge?

Walden and Davis: Part of the motivation was to create a fund and brand to engage the students more, just being more accessible on campus. Right now we’ve had three Hungry Hungry Hacker Campus Challenge events thus far and we call them hacking competitions. 2010 was the first one we had and had about 50 people participated. The following year, people were waiting out the door and it has expanded with the event we held this year on April 1.

So how the event is structured is that in the morning you have two hours of training, where we teach people how to hack and what it means. Then, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., we have the hacking competition, which is a competition where folks are sitting in a room trying to capture flags. So what that means is imagine there’s a website that has some security in front of it and there’s a flag hidden behind it. You have to find a way to penetrate the website and get access to information that you shouldn’t have access to.

One of our specific goals was that we wanted to make it so anyone could win. It’s opened to all college students and it’s designed so that if you were a management student or a biology student or a liberal arts student, you could successfully win the competition without having real in-depth knowledge of computers. Our winning team this year was TinFoilHats and they were probably the most diverse team. They had civil engineers, internationals affairs people and even someone looking into going to pharmacy school. So again, it’s very diverse. H3C2 in a nutshell is about having fun. As we would like to say… eat, hack and be merry! And maybe win a cash prize and a T-shirt to top it off.

CNN Geek Out: What’s the future for H3C2 and the information security field?

Walden and Davis: Right now H3C2 is really targeted toward college students, but we’re hoping to expand this and hopefully quite extensively. We want to be able to hit high schools – helping them become aware of what hacking is and removing away the ambiguity of what it means to be hacker. We’re trying to grow the brand, have more hacking, and we hope that we can do these types of event challenges more than once a year.

There’s a lot of bad players out there and the U.S. doesn’t have as many as security researchers as we probably need, so perhaps all this nerdiness can help feed the curiosity for people to explore cyber security. At the end of the day, security affects all of us and it’s really a matter of having a conversation and being aware of what information we’re sharing and why might be the associated risk. There are no doubts that the geeks are impacting society – the geeks or hacking culture is going to be valuable in the coming years to effectively articulate the concerns we should pay attention to as a society.

Are mean people born that way??

April 19th, 2012 | By love not hate

Are mean people born that way?

Let’s face it – everyone isn’t nice. In fact, being nice is more difficult for some people than others. But is it possible that “niceness” is predetermined by our genes?

A new study in the journal Psychological Science suggests this: If you think the world is full of threatening people, you’re not going feel compelled to be generous by doing things like volunteering and donating to charity. But if you have certain gene variants, you’re more likely to be nice anyway.

Now hold on a minute – this doesn’t give your mean neighbor an excuse to blame his DNA for not letting kids on the block play on his lawn.

It’s a little more complicated than that. The research: A few questions and some spit

Researchers offered an online survey to participants asking questions like:

–do people have a duty to pay taxes?

–are people basically good or bad?

–do you engage in charitable activities?

Then some participants sent in samples of their saliva so researchers could check out their DNA. A total of 348 U.S. residents were included in the final analysis.

Researchers analyzed the spit samples. They looked at the particular variants of receptor genes these people had for the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin.

In case you’re wondering, oxytocin and vasopressin are very similar structurally, and seem to have some similar social effects. For example, they’re both associated with pair bonding – aka bringing closer together two spouses or a mom and her child.

In fact, that’s why oxytocin has been called “the cuddle hormone.”

But while the hormones have similar effects on the brain, they differ in the rest of the body. Oxytocin can induce labor. Vasopressin increases when you’re thirsty and prevents the formation of urine.

As the authors of the new study expected, people who see the world as a threatening place tended to not engage in charitable activities – except if they had particular variants of the receptor genes that the researchers were looking for.

It turns out that if the receptors are especially sensitive to oxytocin and vasopressin, even people who fear others in society will do nice things, said Michael Poulin, assistant professor of psychology at the University at Buffalo and study co-author.

“We’ve found that these genes also predict people’s willingness to be nice on behalf of other people or aggressive on behalf of other people,” Poulin said. In other words, such biological factors may influence your willingness to defend someone else.

That is consistent with other research, which found that rat mothers are more willing to be aggressive on behalf of pups when they received oxytocin.

Previous research has also shown that these hormones make people more socially active.

Blame the DNA?

Keep in mind that this study only shows associations between genes, hormones and behavior, and doesn’t prove direct causal links.

It’s not a “blame your DNA” situation, Poulin said.

“While we found some interesting interactions with genes and perceptions of the world, I would resist saying that we found genes that control behavior,” he cautioned.

The next step for this area of study is to look at how sensitive people are to different kinds of threats.

A few questions that might be posed by future researchers:

–Is it important for people to believe they’re helping good people?

–Is there something in a person’s background or upbringing that influences how threatening they believe the world is?

Poulin and colleagues will also look at what other behaviors these genes might influence.

So it’s probably a little too early for mean people to start using their DNA as a convenient excuse for their bad behavior. But maybe someday…
