Vacuum tubes could be used for super-fast public transport

April 19th, 2012 | By love not hate

Imagine hopping on the Tube in London on your way to work in the morning – and getting off near your office in New York City just three-quarters of an hour later.

If the designers of one revolutionary idea for the public transport of the future are right, that’s just what we could be doing one day.

Evacuated Tube Transport (ETT) is an airless, frictionless form of transport which, its designers say, is safer, cheaper and quieter than trains or aeroplanes.

Using airless vacuum tubes, six-seat, 183kg passenger pods are designed to reach phenomenal speeds of up to 4,000mph (6,500kph), using far less energy than conventional transport methods.

That would allow passengers to travel from New York to Los Angeles in just 45 minutes, from New York to China in just two hours, or all the way round the world in six hours.

The designers behind ETT believe that their system can achieve fifty times more transportation per kWh that electric cars or trains by cutting out air or rolling resistance.

They envisage that it would work as a form of Personal Rapid Transit, and would accordingly be networked like motorways with car-sized capsules automatically routed like internet traffic.

And they claim that it would be cheap to build, at just a quarter the cost of motorways and a tenth of the cost of high-speed railway.

Remarkably, they also say that, despite the incredible speeds that ETT is designed to reach, passengers would only be subjected to minimal G forces, although the physics behind that claim are unclear.

The trade name Evacuated Tube Transport was coined by mechanical engineer Daryl Oster in the early Nineties and in 1997 he was given a patent for the technology.

Since then he has managed to build a consortium of licensees to help him develop the system.

National Stolen Cell Phone Database Is Needed

April 12th, 2012 | By love not hate

On Monday, the Federal Communications Commission and the nation’s four largest wireless phone companies (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) announced plans for the creation of a single nationwide database of all cell phones reported stolen in the U.S. by the end of 2013.

They were joined by the police chiefs of New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. to unveil the new PROTECTS initiative at a press event.

“In DC, New York and other major cities, roughly 40% of all robberies now involve cell phones — endangering both the physical safety of victims and the safety of the personal information on stolen devices,”
said FCC Chairman Julian Genachowski in a prepared statement.

The new database would be used to deny service on any wireless network to devices reported stolen by their original owners. Under the proposed system, if a thief jacks your phone, swaps out the SIM card and wipes the phone clear of your settings, or performs other modifications in an effort to re-use the phone, they still won’t be able to use it as their own or resell it. That’s the aim of the new program, at least.

Here’s how it would work, according to sources at the FCC: Every cell phone, be it an iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone or even an older feature phone, contains a unique International Mobile Equipment Identity number, or IMEI number, a 15 to 17-digit-long string commonly found on the label beneath a phone’s battery pack. (For iPhones, the number can be found using the phone’s software itself, in the “About” settings.)

Wireless carriers already keep track of who owns each device using the IMEI number, but under the new program, if a phone is stolen, a user could report it lost or stolen to their wireless company (presumably using someone else’s phone) and then the IMEI number would be added to the database, which would function as a kind of national “blacklist.” All major carriers would agree not to provide any wireless network connectivity to those IMEI numbers added to the list, unless the original phone owner provides proof of their identity and asks for the phone to be re-activated.

Further, the government and carriers believe it will be difficult for thieves to attempt to alter the IMEI number, because altering it to another, different IMEI number could result in using one that’s already been registered to a separate device, which would set off the carrier’s red flags that the new IMEI number attempting to connect is actually a stolen device.

In an added bit of disincentive, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) on Tuedsay announced his intention to introduce legislation within the coming weeks to make it a felony to tamper with the IMEI number.

According to sources involved in the new initiative, the legislation, which doesn’t yet have a name, is similar in scope to current federal law that makes tampering with vehicle identification numbers (VIN) on automobiles a felony. Schumer’s anti-cell phone number tampering bill would also impose a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison for being caught tampering with a phone’s IMEI, according to sources.

So far, the program, while ambitious in its goals, remains short on some key details.

For example, the national database is expected within 18 months, according to the FCC’s release, but before that, the carriers will be rolling out their own, company specific databases, which should occur within the next 6 months.

But it’s unclear just who is in charge of coordinating the merging of the carrier databases into one effective national database. Sources close to the FCC and Congress said that it was a wireless industry-led effort and that the wireless companies would ultimately be in charge of designing and implementing it. But CTIA, the Wireless Association, did not respond TPM’s request for further answers on how the program would work.

As for measuring the success of the program itself, the FCC pointed out in its Tuesday release that: “The wireless industry will publish quarterly updates and submit them to the FCC on progress on these initiatives.”

But again, it’s unclear what action the FCC will take against companies found to be dropping the ball (or, dare we say it: signal) on this particular initiative.

Sources close to the FCC told TPM that the agency would be vigorous in checking up on the database and would not hesitate to use all of its available powers to make sure carriers are keeping up with their end of the bargain.

Still, no matter how you look at it, there’s clearly a need for improved cell phone security on some level: Lookout, a company that makes anti-theft mobile device tracking software, recently projected that lost and stolen phones could cost users in the U.S. alone a whopping $30 billion in 2012.

Michelle Obama bans actress Kerry Washington from White House

April 12th, 2012 | By love not hate

Michelle Obama has banned actress Kerry Washington from the White House because she it ‘too flirty’ with the President, it was sensationally claimed today.

The First Lady was said to have a ‘watch list’ of women that were to be kept away from her 50-year-old husband – but it’s a story one White House official claims it totally false.

According to an article in the National Enquirer, Mrs Obama, 48, planned to keep the actress at arm’s length – despite Miss Washington’s honorary post on the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

An White House official told MailOnline that the story is ’100 per cent false’.

Kerry Washington, 35, is a keen Democrat and campaigned for Obama in the 2008 president race.

There were striking parallels between the explosive claims and Miss Washington’s latest role in a new ABC series called Scandal

She plays character Olivia Pope, the tough boss in a crisis management firm, protecting the public images of the Washington political elite.

In the first episode, it was revealed that Pope had a long-running affair with the fictional American president Fitzgerald Grant.

The National Enquirer also named Scarlett Johansson as another ‘flirt’ who made Michelle’s banned list.

Mexican drug assassin cuts off fingers on tape dancing to reggae music

April 10th, 2012 | By love not hate

A ruthless member of one of Mexico’s most notorious drug gangs enjoyed bloodshed so much that he recorded himself mutilating the bodies of his victims.

Enrique Elizondo Flores was arrested in January, when he confessed to killing at least 75 people, many of whom were travellers that he and his thugs plucked off buses.

But if the nature of his deeds wasn’t twisted enough, a cell phone video purportedly shows a smiling Flores dancing to reggae music with his comrades as he slices the ears and fingers off several victims.

According to the Reforma newspaper, the video also shows a bag of human fingers and the ears of the victims.

The Reforma reported that on the night of his January 20 arrest, Flores, aka ‘El Arabe’ (The Arab) and ‘El Cuervo’ (The Raven), was in a bar bragging about the atrocities he committed as a member of the infamous Zetas drug cartel.

Among those listening to his stories was a brave soul who called the cops to report every word out of Flores’ mouth.

Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene said Flores, 35, told investigators that he had been working in the area at least three years and that he was in charge of killing members of the rival Gulf drug cartel heading to the towns of Cerralvo and General Trevino, located close to Mexico’s border with Texas.

They are among at least 92 bus passengers the Zetas are accused of killing in three attacks in January and March 2011.

Many the victims were originally from the central state of Guanajuato and had arrived in Cerralvo from the border city of Reynosa, Domene said.

Flores was known ‘for torturing, maiming and then killing his victims,’ Domene said.

Last year, authorities in the neighboring state of Tamaulipas unearthed 193 bodies from clandestine graves in the town of San Fernando.

Security forces said they were led to the site by members of the Zetas who confessed to kidnapping and killing bus passengers traveling through the area.

Prosecutors suggest the gang may have been either forcefully recruiting people to work for them or trying to kill rivals they suspected were aboard the buses.

Univision reported that when Flores was asked if he was sorry for the crimes he and his accomplices had committed, he replied: ‘I only regret having killed those who were innocent and women’.

More than 47,000 people have been killed nationwide since President Felipe Calderon launched a crackdown against drug traffickers in December 2006.

‘I’ve lost it’: McDonald’s Mega Millions ‘winner’ now claims she cannot find $105m ticket (but hasn’t really looked for it and has no plans to start)

April 6th, 2012 | By love not hate

she said she put the winning lotto ticket in a place no one else would find it.

And that appears to go for herself too, as McDonald’s worker Mirlande Wilson has now revealed she cannot find the ticket with the winning numbers on it which could snag her a $105million prize.

The Maryland mother-of-seven said she has lost the ticket but isn’t very worried about finding it any time soon.

She told the New York Post: ‘I have no idea where it is. I’m not sure I have it. I’m still looking for it. I haven’t even looked in my uniform pants yet.

‘I’m still looking everywhere to find it, in my purse, everywhere.’

The 37-year-old told the paper earlier this week that she hid the ticket at the McDonald’s restaurant she worked at, even though she is claiming she bought the ticket with her own money and not through the work pool, much to the chagrin of her coworkers.

Her daughter Stephanie also revealed that her mother would not even allow them to look for the ticket.

‘I wanted to look for it, I was crying. She wouldn’t let us. It’s a lot of money,’, the 15-year-old said.

Since the Mega Millions draw last Friday, the Haitian immigrant has dominated the headlines as she came forward to say she had one of the three winning tickets.

But she refused to share the jackpot with her McDonald’s coworkers and said she bought the winning ticket with a lucky dollar she found on the ground.

She then went on to say it was in a safe place at an undisclosed location before saying it was at the fast food restaurant she worked in at Milford Mill. Now she claims she lost it.

She is leaving the discovery of the ticket in the hands of God: ‘It’s a blessing from God. If it’s meant to be, we’ll [find and] claim the ticket.’

But the mother-of-seven’s coworkers aren’t so sure she’s telling the truth.

Another colleague told the Post: ‘I don’t believe her. I didn’t believe her from the beginning, she’s always been strange.

‘She’s an attention seeker. She likes to have all the attention on herself.’

On her Facebook page, Ms Wilson has pledged to donate all of the winnings to rebuild her earthquake-ravaged native Haiti.

She wrote: ‘All my true friend know im not greedy a person [sic] i don’t want da money it made my life a living hell already im gonna give it all to rebuild haiti yall [sic] can chase all want my life and, my children it more important for money [sic].’

Ms Wilson held her own news conference last night where a lawyer pleaded that his client ‘be allowed to return to a normal life’, according to Wsbt.com.

The attorney said the attention had caused his client’s blood pressure to spike. He said he was hired to protect her in case she was sued.

Horror as 5-year-old girl finds hidden camera in a D.C. Starbucks bathroom

September 19th, 2011 | By love not hate

Not So Grande: A girl in D.C. found a hidden camera in the toilet. Not So Grande: A girl in D.C. found a hidden camera in the toilet.

A five-year-old girl walked out of Starbucks with more than just a hot chocolate after having discovered a hidden camera in the coffee shop’s unisex bathroom.

The girl’s family is now suing the coffee chain for damages after she and her father were taped while using the toilet in a D.C. Starbucks.

William Yockey and his family were visiting the capital in late August from their home in Norfolk, Virginia.

His daughter discovered a video camera hidden underneath the sink that was pointed towards the toilet. Yockey determined that the camera was on and recording, then notified the police.

The camera was taken by police for further investigation, and no suspects have been named.

Because so little is known about the camera- including who put it there and when- this lawsuit could theoretically be opened up to include anyone else who used the restroom at that Starbucks.

The lawsuit, which will be heard in D.C. Superior Court, claims that the daughter suffered ‘permanent and continuing emotional pain and suffering, humiliation, embarrassment and great emotional distress’.

Court records show that Starbucks tried having the suit dismissed, but the request was overturned and pretrial dates have been set.

A spokesman for Starbucks told MailOnline that they have acted in compliance of their company’s policy which puts a premium on the safety of their customers and employees.

‘Our store partners took swift action as soon as they became aware of the issue – immediately alerting the police department and assisting in the investigation,’ said spokesman Alan Hilowitz.

‘We continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement on this matter; however, because there is pending litigation, we cannot comment on the specifics of this case,’ Hilowitz continued. ‘However, we can tell you that as a part of regular store operations, we monitor the seating areas and rest rooms in our stores on a regular basis to identify potential safety or security concerns.’

While this is the first time that this particular Starbucks, located on the corner of 7th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, it was not the first ‘peeping Tom’ incident for the worldwide brand.

Recorded: The camera that a five-year-old girl found in a D.C. Starbucks was smaller than this video camera, and fashioned to a sink pipe.Recorded: The camera that a five-year-old girl found in a D.C. Starbucks was smaller than this video camera, and fashioned to a sink pipe.

In May, a man named William Zafra Velasco, 25, was charged with filming 45 women and children in a California Starbucks.

In the case, Velasco attached a fake coat hook to the bathroom wall, which had a secret camera installed to shoot video.

He wasn’t the original mastermind though: the coat hook spy camera can be bought over the internet for $36.

Workers began to raise concerns about Velasco after he kept entering the woman’s bathroom on hourly intervals. It later turned out that he did so to download the recordings and replace the camera.

Immediately after his arrest, Velasco was charged with the felony crime of secretly videotaping victims for sexual gratification.

Branches in Connecticut and Florida have had similarly voyeuristic complaints.
