Openly gay in the NFL

The National Football League may soon be faced with its first openly gay player – a man who intends to keep playing after coming out.

Football has never had a gay active player in its nearly 100-year history, but some have argued that it’s time for a change.

That change is likely to come sooner rather than later, as a player is reportedly preparing to make a public announcement about his sexual orientation before the 2013 season.

CBS sportswriter Mike Freeman writes: ‘I’m told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months – and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career.’

Freeman did not say who the player is or any specifics about when his announcement would be made.

But whoever the player is, he can count on the support of former players like Scott Fujita and active stars like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who are all outspoken LGBT advocates.

Fujita told Freeman: ‘I honestly think the players of the NFL have been ready for an openly gay player for quite some time now.

He added: ‘Trust me, the coming out of a player would create much bigger waves outside the locker room than inside.’

But on the opposite end of the spectrum are opponents and a culture of homophobia.

Days before the Super Bowl, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was asked about the prospect of gay players in the locker room during a radio interview.

Culliver shot back: ‘I don’t do the gay guys man. I don’t do that.’

When asked if he believed there were any gay players on the 49ers roster, Culliver responded: ‘No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.’

Culliver later issued a bizarre apology for his remarks, saying that the comments were a ‘reflection of thoughts in my head’ but not representative of how he feels.

A debate about gay players in the NFL was sparked anew in the Manti Te’o ‘fake girlfriend’ hoax, where the former Notre Dame football star claimed that he was the victim of a prankster who was posing as a woman and later faked her death.

It was alleged that Te’o was gay and had invented the online persona in an attempt to cover it up.

He denied he was behind the scam – as well as being gay – in an interview with talk show host Katie Couric.

At the NFL scouting combine earlier this month, Te’o – as well as several other players – were reportedly asked about their sexual orientations.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called such a line of questioning ‘unacceptable,’ and the New York attorney general has urged the league to investigate.

Michigan quarterback-turned-receiver Denard Robinson, Colorado tight end Nick Kasa and Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell indicated they were asked about their sexual orientation at the combine earlier this month in Indianapolis.

Ciara on top of her game

Promotions queen Ciara isn’t playing when it comes to “Body Party,” the latest single from her upcoming album One Woman Army. (She also stopped by Idolator HQ last week to hang for a bit — more on that to come.) But the “Goodies” songstress has  been making all kinds of promo rounds in New York and Los Angeles, and accordingly, she can be seen giving all kinds of fierce in April’s issues of Annex Magazine and Vogue.

It’s a given that CiCi looks amazing, and with “Body Party” growing on us a little more each day, she seems primed and ready to officially unleash the One Woman Army era. Go get ‘em — and watch behind-the-scenes footage of her Annex shoot up top.

Nicki Minaj MOTORCYCLE TIGHTS

She can usually be found squeezing her curvy figure into skintight, revealing outfits for her various red carpet appearances.

But Nicki Minaj opted for a different look on Monday as she headed out on her motorbike.

The 30-year-old singer sported skintight blue leggings and black wellington boots with a fluorescent pink sole, topped off with a black leather jacket and patterned floral pink helmet.

And Nicki looked more than confident as she sat astride the Kawasaki bike, leaning forward to grip hold of the handles.

Nicki shared the picture with her followers, writing on Twitter: ‘I’m big willy no bike gear.’

Of course, Nicki has had experience riding bikes before, and famously rode a ‘bike’ made of ice in the video for her hit single Super Bass.

Clearly hoping to go incognito in her guise, Nicki later shared a shot of herself still wearing the helmet while inside a Malbu store, writing: ‘#SupermarketRealness #LeftmyHelmetOnRealness #vrrrrrooooommmm.’

In the shot, Nicki could be seen standing in front of a magazine stand, on which was a copy of her Elle magazine cover.

The Elle shoot showed a different side of the singer, stripping back her usual crazy make-up and colourful hair to display a more sombre look.

But Nicki admitted in the accompanying interview that going bare-faced was a difficult prospect for her.

She said: ‘When I saw myself with barely any makeup at all, it was such a … like, I’m so, so attached to my pink lipstick, it’s hard. I feel that it’s become a part of me.

‘To go in front of the camera, without pink lips or big ol’ crazy lashes -  you know, nothing – I felt naked. It was scary! So this photoshoot was a real accomplishment in my eyes.’

Rick Ross raps about living in the lap of luxury so emphatically, and it’s a wonder that it’s taken him this long to act the part. Reebok tapped Rozay for the starring role in their latest commercial for a line of white on white sneakers, that include the Question Low, Workout Plus, Classic Leather, Workout Mid, Twilight Zone Pump, ExoFit Hi, Phase 1 and DMX 10.

The MMG’s frontman chills poolside garbed like an extra in 2pac’s “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” video at a lavish mansion locale, that came complete with beautiful women, a personal chef, and a flamingo. None of these factors defer attention from the commercial’s main premise – the icy white Reebok Classic.

With the scene set, slapstick humor fueled the remainder of the minute-long spot. We won’t entirely spoil things for you, but let’s just say that the “Box Chevy” rapper did more than reprimand the chef for making a costly mistake. See Rick Ross live white hot below.

Rihanna made no apology for being late to her show in Toronto.

While Bieber fans booed the 19-year-old pop star in London ealier this month when he made the same move, Rihanna’s fans were a bit more understanding of her tardiness.

They crowd gave her a positive reception when she finally took the stage but she made no apologies for her late arrival.

Rumors have surfaced that Rihanna and Chris Brown may wed.

LIL WAYNE LEAVES HOSPITAL

Los Angeles (CNN) — Rapper Lil Wayne has been released from a Los Angeles hospital where he was taken after suffering a seizure last week, his publicist said late Monday night.

The 30-year-old rapper’s hospitalization at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center triggered media reports that he was near death — rumors his associates were quick to squash. Few details about his medical condition were made public.

On Monday night, Mack Maine, the president of Wayne’s label, Young Money, thanked the hospital.

“@LilTunechi has been officially been released and is headed home…God is great,” he tweeted.

Lil Tunechi is Lil Wayne’s nickname, as well as his Twitter handle.

An online report that Lil Wayne was near death and on life support Friday cause panic among his fans and caused Twitter to light up with messages of concern.

“I’m good everybody,” the rapper tweeted Friday evening, helping defuse the concerns. “Thnx for the prayers and love.”

Young Money publicist Sarah Cunningham acknowledged Friday that Lil Wayne had had a seizure, but members of the New Orleans artist’s camp have shot down reports that he was near death.

“Dont believe the nonsense about comas and tubes to breathe … that’s false!!” Maine tweeted Friday night.

Instead of ighting for his life, Lil Wayne was watching the Syracuse University Orange play the Georgetown Hoyas in the Big East men’s basketball tournament, he said.

Born Dwayne Carter, Lil Wayne is one of the rap world’s most successful artists.

He won best rap album for “Tha Carter III” at the 2008 Grammy awards and took home three more Grammys the next year.

Beyond winning over critics, he’s also been a commercial success.

In September, Billboard reported the rapper had tallied 109 hits on its Hot 100, surpassing the record previously held by Elvis Presley.

But he’s also run into trouble outside the studio and off stage.

Lil Wayne was arrested in 2007 outside New York City’s Beacon Theater after police said they found a .40-caliber pistol on his tour bus. He pleaded guilty to felony gun charges and spent eight months at New York’s Rikers Island jail.
