50 cent making progress

March 26th, 2013 | By love not hate

Rapper and businessman 50 Cent, a.k.a. Curtis Jackson. (CBS News)

(CBS News) Rap musician and actor 50 Cent also happens to be a millionaire businessman. He talks with our Tracy Smith:

He’s right at home rapping “In da Club” . . . (“We gon’ sip Bacardi like it’s your birthday!”). But these days 50 Cent is just as comfortable on QVC, where he says he sold $300,000 worth of headphones in less than 10 minutes.

50 Cent is a study in contradictions. He’s a former drug dealer who has sold more than 32 million albums. But he made his first serious money investing in water.

50 Cent saw the “energy water” wave coming, and laid it out to his business partner.

“I said, ‘Look, this is what I want to do.’ Boom! Put ‘em on the table. ‘I want to sell water.’ And he was like, ‘To who?’

“Like, ‘To everybody!’” he laughed.

In 2004, he invested in Glaceau Vitamin Water, and when Coca-Cola bought the brand a few years later, it’s estimated 50 Cent made $60 million off the deal.

“I’ve heard so many numbers,” he demurred. But was it a good deal? “It was great.”

50 Cent’s early life was not so great.

He was born Curtis Jackson, in Queens, N.Y., to a single mom who made a living selling drugs. She died when Curtis was only eight, and he moved in with his grandparents.

“My grandparents were a representation of doing it the right way, but we were completely struggling,” he said, while his mom’s friends, the drug dealers, had what he described as “financial freedom.” “I was trying to figure out how to do it myself. This is why so early I got involved.”

Curtis started dealing drugs when he was 12 years old.

He saw music as his ticket out, and by the spring of 2000, he had a record deal, and a new rap name: 50 Cent.

Still, street life wasn’t so easy to escape. In front of the house where his grandma was tending the garden, 50 Cent was shot nine times. There are still bullet fragments in his body, including in his tongue. “Yeah, my voice is different from what it was like prior to that event.”

“So you have a reminder, every time you open your mouth?” asked Smith.

“Yeah. Or I look in the mirror, I see a little crease in the side.”

But 50 turned his notoriety into best-selling albums — and business opportunities, from clothing to books to movies, where he’s written, produced and starred alongside actors like Robert De Niro.

And now he’s getting into the boxing ring, as a promoter. He’s signed five fighters, hoping to bring a younger audience to the sport.

“Is your investment in boxing an emotional thing, or is there money to be made here?” asked Smith.

“Well, I mean, it’s both,” he replied. “I mean, I’m invested financially, but it’s more. I get a chance to live vicariously through them.”

But he hasn’t left music behind. He’s been in the studio, working on his first album in three years.

“It feels like magic,” he said. “Feels like magic to create something that is just my idea.”

“Despite everything that you’ve accomplished, you know that there are still people out there who are going to see you as a thug,” Smith said.

“Right. And I don’t mind that,” 50 Cent said.

“You don’t? Why not?”

“They don’t matter. Those are the people, they didn’t support me to begin with.”

Still, at 37 years old, 50 Cent is thinking about his legacy. He traveled to East Africa last year with the United Nations World Food Program, and now he donates a meal for every bottle he sells of his new energy drink.

“We’re almost at four million meals,” he said.

And if the thug image helps make the sale — that’s just fine with 50.

50 Cent still continues to put RICK ROSS on blast

January 31st, 2013 | By love not hate

Rick Ross, 50 Cent

How does Rick Ross escape a shooting uninjured when he was the target? Well, if you ask50 Cent, the answer is easy—it was all fake!

The Get Rich or Die Tryin’ star took to Twitter shortly after Ricky Rozay’s scare to discuss his thoughts on the matter, and seeing how the two have been beefing it since 2009, it wasn’t exactly a “Oh my, glad you’re OK,” message.

“Hahaha fat boy hit the building?lol it looks staged to me. No hole’s in da car,” 50 tweeted, with a photo of the Teflon Don’s car (which had no bullet holes) after his crash.

Rick Ross targeted in Ft. Lauderdale shooting

“hahaha that boy was spooked. I ride like OBAMA level 6 built proof, bomb proof, you already know,” he continued. “Nah they shot in the air then he drove into a building…Man they miss the whole f–king car were they do that at ?”
Of course, there’s more, silly.
“ok it was just firecrackers but who ever lit them in trouble cause the man damn near had a heart attack,” 50 Cent added.
The Maybach Music Group head honcho has yet to speak about the incident that involved an unidentified gunman opened fire on his Rolls-Royce as he was cruising around Ft. Lauderdale early Monday morning, but his camp released the rapper’s freestyle to Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” later that day.
And although his verse was likely recorded before the event in Florida took place, Rick Ross raps, “I can’t believe I’m alive.”

Meanwhile, police released the 911 calls that were received when the shooting took place, and when Rick Ross crashed his Rolls-Royce into a nearby building.
According to the Miami Herald, the manager of the Floridian, a nearby diner that was affected by the shooting, said to the dispatcher, “I just heard a bunch of gunshots go off and a car sped by. Oh my God, they’re turning around and coming back. I’m hanging up.”
Moments later, a woman called in to report Ross’ car crashing into her apartment. “I’m sleeping and I hear this screaming and yelling and a crash,” she told the dispatcher. “There’s a car at my front door!”
Ft. Lauderdale police were reviewing video surveillance of the scene Tuesday, but released no new details other than the 911 calls. The rapper was accompanied by 28-year-old girlfriend Shateria L. Moragne-el, who was also uninjured.

50 cent says Rick Ross faked his shooting!

January 29th, 2013 | By love not hate

In a bizarre outburst 50 Cent has accused his fellow rapper Rick Ross of faking a drive-by shooting that left his Rolls Royce riddled with bullet holes.

After looking at blurry Instagram pictures of the crime scene  50 Cent tweeted that he thought it looked ‘staged’.

‘Hahaha fat boy hit the building? Lol it looks staged to me,’ tweeted 50 Cent.

But later photos of the scene clearly showed bullet holes in the tires, bumper and lights of the car, which Ross crashed into an apartment building as he attempted to flee the scene.

Ross has been locked in a dispute with 50 Cent since 2009, when Rick hit out at the rapper in his song Mafia Music.

Despite 50 Cent’s doubt, police have confirmed that they are treating the shooting as an ‘an active and ongoing criminal investigation’.

In a statement they revealed that neither Rick nor his girlfriend Shateria L. Moragne-le – who was a passenger in the car – were hurt in the crash.

It came as they drove home in the early hours of Monday morning following Ross’ 37th birthday at the Miami nightclub LIV.

He had been celebrating his birthday with stars including Diddy, Christina Milian, Fabolous Quincy Combs and Christina Milian.

This latest incident comes after Rick was forced to cancel several US concert dates after the Gangster Disciples threatened to crash t two North Carolina shows in retaliation for him allegedly using the gang’s logo for his mixtape ‘Black Bar Mitzvah’.

50 Cent Covers Vibe International, Talks Dr. Dre, Face Tattoos, Chelsea Handler, And Drake

March 23rd, 2011 | By love not hate

50 Cent is the cover man for Vibe’s special international issue. In the issue, he spoke about the limits of face tattoos, his reaction to Dr. Dre‘s Sleek headphones comments, his relationship with comedian and TV host Chelsea Handler, feeling like Drake got robbed at the Grammys, and more. Check out excerpts from the interview below.

On Dre Dre’s reaction to his Sleek headphones
“I have a strong personality, a strong character. And I can be difficult to deal with at certain points because I’m vocal. If you upset Em, he’s just gonna not talk to you. You’re not going to get him in the next room you wanna get him in. With Dre, the same. He’s not comfortable with friction. That [tweet] is, “Hey look, I’m here. Is everybody still paying attention?” So they go, “Why he say that? Why he say we mad?” Then the meeting happens.”

On his relationship with Chelsea Handler
“Chelsea is confident. I think confidence is the sexiest thing about a person. She’s the kind of person that if you’re blessed with the opportunity to hang out with her, you’ll enjoy it. I’m not sure you’ll look at her and actually want to jump over the table and fuck her, but you might. You would leave after talking with her feeling that she is a cool person.”

On Drake and this year’s Best New Artist Grammy
“I think Drake got robbed. He should have got artist of the year last year [ laughs], to be real with you… He did a lot, man. I don’t believe that Drake would have been as successful or his project would have been as successful if Lil’ Wayne was home. That point where Wayne had to sit down provided a complete focus on Drake.”

On artists with face tattoos
“That’s the craziest thing. Not necessarily Gucci, but to tattoo your face says that there’s not a possibility that you can actually walk into a legitimate establishment without makeup covering your face every day. That does not work. It creates a separation. It says, “I’m an artist.” That’s it. That’s the statement you make when you go and tattoo your face…But know that the public will not have interest in you as an artist for life. You have to be phenomenal. Talk to the best that do it and they will tell you that it will take more than you being an artist. It takes marketing, maneuvering to generate for that long. When you got 40-year-old rappers in the game, those guys have maneuvered and survived.”

On his international appeal
I did the groundwork. I traveled. To them I’m not a myth. I’m a real person. They’ve seen me live in performances in Croatia, Kosovo, India…The same way they feel about me in New York, they feel about me in Africa and they feel about me in India. You can spin the globe and stop it wherever you want and say 50 Cent, and they know exactly who you’re talking about and they know the material. It is what it is. I don’t have the trophy case to reflect that, but I can’t eat trophies.

50 Cent Charges Neighbors To Shovel Snow

December 29th, 2010 | By love not hate

Most of us were stuck in doors the past few days due to the effects of predicted blizzard and 50 Cent was no exception. So what better way to make a quick (and legal) Benjamin Franklin than pushing some snow?

He said via Twitter:

“I’m going out to shovel snow and see if I can make me a few extra dollars today. I’m charging more if they want to take pictures
I want a hundred dollars per house. I bet anybody ill make a grand moving snow today.

I want a hundred dollars if your stuck. Ill get you out. Lol”

Apparently his scheme was successful, and Curtis was able to book some work.

“I’m paying 30 dollars and hour I only want 3 workers that 90 dollars and hour but I think we can do all 4 in a hour in a half. Lol

this snow moving business is just to see if laws apply to every business. After the first job I got 4 more now I have 3 kid I hired.

One is a cute kid he has on a snow suit. So I’m sending him to ring the door bell to ask if we can shovel there snow. Lol”

Glad to see someone was able to make their snow day productive.

Burglars Caught Inside 50 Cent’s Mansion Drinking Wine

December 22nd, 2010 | By love not hate

Police have arrested two men for trespassing and breaking into 50 Cent’s 52-room Connecticut mansion.

TMZ reports that police received a call around 6AM from security guards at the mansion — once owned by Mike Tyson — about a suspicious car in the driveway.

When officials arrived, they found the would-be burglars including one who was hiding in a closet and drinking a bottle of wine he’d stolen from the G-Unit head.

Police say the two suspects entered through an unlocked door and were in possession of marijuana.

Both men were arrested and held on $50,000 bond.
